A tragic incident occurred early Sunday morning in Philadelphia’s Nicetown section, where a fire led to the collapse of three rowhomes on West Bristol Street. Emergency responders received a call about the fire shortly before 5 a.m., and within ten minutes, it was confirmed that the homes had completely collapsed.

Assistant Fire Chief Charles Walker reported that a body was recovered from the scene, believed to belong to a woman. Search efforts utilized K9s to navigate through the rubble to locate any potential victims. As the situation unfolded, crews prioritized safety to prevent further collapses, and operations were placed under control by 6:33 a.m.

Two women were hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the incident. An 82-year-old was treated for smoke inhalation, while a 63-year-old suffered burns. One of the victims is a staff member from City Council President Kenyatta Johnson’s office, who is reportedly in critical condition. Johnson expressed hope for her recovery, highlighting her dedication and beloved status within the community.

Witnesses described a loud explosion prior to the fire, with one neighbor stating, “Glass was breaking, debris was flying. I didn’t know what to do. I just took off running.” Another neighbor recounted damage to her own home, with broken windows and structural issues.

Mayor Cherelle Parker indicated that the event may have involved an explosion, although fire officials are still investigating the precise cause of the fire. In light of the incident, a fund has been established for the families affected, and ten residents in the vicinity have been evacuated as a precaution.
