The first weekend of the 85th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota was marked by tragedy as one man lost his life and 17 others were injured. The fatal incident involved a 58-year-old man who lost control of his 2019 Harley Davidson while navigating a curve on Saturday, August 2. He collided with three other motorcycles and was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, the other riders involved sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
In addition to this tragic accident, there were 14 further non-fatal crashes recorded during the rally’s opening weekend, which occurred from 6 a.m. on Saturday to 6 a.m. on Sunday. Notably, at least eight of the injured riders were not wearing helmets, as highlighted by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. A total of ten people were transported to nearby hospitals, with seven individuals suffering serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The names and ages of those involved have not been released by officials.
