Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew tragically lost their lives on Thursday night after being struck by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bikes in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, near their hometown in Salem County, according to New Jersey State Police.

The team expressed their shock and sorrow via social media on Friday morning, describing the situation as an “unimaginable tragedy.”

Johnny Gaudreau, 31, had joined the Blue Jackets in July 2022, signing as a free agent from the Calgary Flames. He and his 29-year-old brother were set to be groomsmen at their sister Katie’s wedding scheduled for Friday in Philadelphia.

Johnny Gaudreau is survived by his wife Meredith and their two young children, Noa and Johnny, both born in Columbus. Matthew is survived by his wife Madeline, along with their parents Jane and Gus Gaudreau and sisters Kristen and Katie.

According to state police, the brothers were biking along Pennsville Auburn Road shortly before 8:30 p.m. when they were hit by Sean M. Higgins, 43, from Woodstown, New Jersey. Higgins has been charged with two counts of death by auto, equivalent to vehicular homicide, and is being held in the Salem County Correctional Facility.

During a preliminary court hearing on Friday, Higgins’ arraignment was postponed to the following Thursday. He has been instructed not to discuss the case with anyone except his attorney while incarcerated. Higgins expressed confusion about the process of obtaining legal representation.

Troopers believe Higgins was driving under the influence at the time of the accident. The incident occurred while he was operating a Jeep Grand Cherokee and attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him, ultimately colliding with the Gaudreau brothers, who were traveling north on the side of the road.

Witnesses noted that upon police arrival, Higgins exhibited signs of alcohol intoxication and admitted to consuming five to six beers prior to and during his drive. He also failed a field sobriety test.

The Blue Jackets released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss of the Gaudreau brothers. “Johnny was not only a great hockey player but also a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend. Our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends during this difficult time,” the statement read.

Higgins’ drinking habits reportedly led to his impatience and reckless driving, resulting in the tragic accident.

This incident follows the death of Blue Jackets goalie Matiss Kivlenieks in a fireworks accident in 2021, marking another deep loss for the franchise.

As the team prepares for the upcoming season, they will undoubtedly feel the void left by Johnny Gaudreau, who had aspirations for a rebound year following subpar seasons. His goal was to enhance the spirits of Blue Jackets fans and improve team performance, but now the focus shifts to supporting his grieving family and honoring his memory.
