The Columbus Blue Jackets are in mourning after the tragic loss of one of their key players in an accident.

On their X account, the team shared the unfortunate news on Friday, following widespread speculation the day before.

Johnny Gaudreau, who was 31, was remembered as a devoted husband and father to two children. His brother, Matthew, aged 29, was also a hockey player.

The brothers were reportedly in their hometown of New Jersey for their sister’s wedding, scheduled for today.

The NHL community expressed its shock and sorrow over the passing of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew. The organization stated on their website that while Johnny was renowned for his exceptional skills on the ice, earning him the nickname “Johnny Hockey,” he was also a loving family man and cherished teammate, deeply admired by all who knew him.

New Jersey state police have released information regarding the accident that resulted in the brothers’ deaths.

Authorities reported that the brothers were biking along County Route 551 North when they were struck by 43-year-old Sean Higgins, who was driving an SUV.

Following an investigation, police suspect that Higgins may have been under the influence of alcohol. He has been charged with two counts of death by auto and has been arrested. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
