NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew tragically lost their lives in a car accident in New Jersey on Thursday night. The 31-year-old forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets and his 29-year-old brother were riding their bicycles in Oldsman Township when they were struck by a vehicle, according to local police reports.
The driver, Sean Higgins, 43, has been arrested and charged with two counts of death by auto. Authorities revealed that he hit the Gaudreau brothers from behind while trying to overtake two other cars. Higgins is suspected of driving under the influence and is currently detained at the Salem County Correctional Facility.
In a heartfelt tribute, the Columbus Blue Jackets described the incident as an “unimaginable tragedy.” The statement expressed that Johnny was not only an exceptional athlete but also a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend.
Matthew Gaudreau was also a professional hockey player, having played for the Reading Royals in Pennsylvania. Both brothers were in New Jersey to participate as groomsmen at their sister’s wedding in Philadelphia scheduled for Friday.
Known as “Johnny Hockey,” Gaudreau had an impressive NHL career, scoring 243 goals over 11 seasons before joining the Blue Jackets in 2022 after a stint with the Calgary Flames. The team acknowledged his joyful spirit and the excitement he brought to fans during his time on the ice.
