A tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder has left four people dead and nine others injured, with at least one suspect in custody. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed the fatalities through a post on social media, clarifying that reports of the suspect being “neutralized” were not accurate.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith earlier stated there were “multiple injuries,” though he did not disclose the total number or the severity of those injuries. He described the situation as a “very, very fluid investigation” and indicated that more details would be provided later in the day.
The incident prompted a hard lockdown at the school around 10:45 a.m., following reports of gunfire. Both the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the FBI have deployed agents to the scene to assist local authorities.
In response to the shooting, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his support and urged citizens to pray for those affected. He emphasized the state’s commitment to providing assistance and support as the investigation unfolds.
President Joe Biden has also been informed about the situation and his administration is coordinating with local and federal officials as more information comes to light.
As a precaution, nearby schools were placed on lockdown, and Clarke County School District Superintendent Robbie Hooker assured parents that local law enforcement is being closely monitored. He expressed solidarity with the affected community in Barrow County.
Continued updates will be provided as more details emerge.
