Tragedy Strikes MLS: Young Goalkeeper Holden Trent Passes Away at 25

Holden Trent, the goalkeeper for the Philadelphia Union, tragically passed away on Saturday at the age of 25, as announced by the Major League Soccer club.

The Philadelphia Union chose to keep details of Trent’s passing private, respecting the wishes of his friends and family. In a statement, the club expressed its sorrow, stating, “The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent. While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better.”

The club continued to highlight Trent’s qualities by saying he exemplified determination, dedication, and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. They offered their heartfelt condolences to his family, fiancée, and friends.

Major League Soccer also expressed its grief on social media, stating, “Major League Soccer joins the Philadelphia Union and our entire soccer community in mourning the tragic passing of Union goalkeeper Holden Trent. A young goalkeeper with a bright future, Trent showcased determination and professionalism every day as he contributed to the close-knit goalkeeping unit at Philadelphia.”

MLS extended its deepest sympathies to his fiancée, family, friends, teammates, and the entire Philadelphia Union community, while coordinating with the club to provide necessary resources and support during this difficult time.

A Greensboro, North Carolina native, Trent was drafted as the No. 28 overall pick by the Union in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft from High Point University. Although he had not yet made his first-team debut, Trent had six appearances with the Union’s second team in MLS Next Pro.
