A shooting incident at the Michigan State Fair in Novi on Saturday night has left one 14-year-old dead and another injured. Novi police responded around 9:56 p.m. after hearing gunfire in the southwest area of the Suburban Collection Showplace parking lot near Grand River Avenue. The shooting was initially reported as an active shooter situation, leading to a significant response from nearby law enforcement.
Both victims, who had reportedly traveled via Uber from Detroit to Farmington Hills before heading to the fairgrounds with friends, were taken to a local hospital. One succumbed to their injuries, while the other is currently in stable condition.
Authorities believe the shooting was related to an ongoing argument that had started earlier that week in other communities. As of now, no suspects have been identified.
The Novi Police Department is urging anyone with information about the incident to reach out at 248-348-7100.
In response to the tragedy, the Michigan State Fair operations team stated that the fair would continue to take place with heightened police presence and changes to entry policies. The fairgrounds will close at 7 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, and attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Box office and entry will close at 6 p.m. on both days.
In a statement, the Michigan State Fair expressed condolences for the loss of life, emphasizing their commitment to safety. They highlighted that increased safety measures, including weapons detection systems and a strong police presence, were already in place.
