SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The search and rescue operation following a tragic boating accident at Lake Tahoe has officially concluded. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office reported that the last missing victim’s body was recovered from the lake on Monday at approximately 2:40 p.m.
Over the course of the weekend, authorities confirmed that as of Monday morning, there were two survivors, seven fatalities, and one boater still missing after a boat capsized in rough waters on Saturday, June 21, during eight-foot waves. Tragically, six of the initial guests aboard the vessel lost their lives, with two individuals subsequently hospitalized.
Search efforts spanned over 390 square miles, involving local law enforcement and rescue units, including the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard suspended its search operations on Sunday at 10:55 a.m. after conducting an extensive 12-hour search but expressed their condolences to the families affected, acknowledging the difficulty of halting search efforts under such tragic circumstances.
Law enforcement officials highlighted the unpredictable nature of weather conditions on Lake Tahoe, emphasizing the importance of safety precautions when boating. They urged all water-goers to wear life jackets, assess weather forecasts prior to embarking, file float plans, and have a reliable communication device on hand.
Authorities have indicated that victim identifications will be released after notifying the next of kin.
