A landslide in Ketchikan on Sunday resulted in one fatality, three injuries, and significant damage to several homes. The landslide occurred around 4 p.m., descending from a steep slope above the Third Avenue Bypass and impacting the White Cliff neighborhood.
The deceased has been identified as Sean Griffin, a senior maintenance technician for the city, who was on-site to clear storm drains when the incident took place. Ketchikan’s city and borough authorities praised Griffin for his dedication to the community, noting his unwavering commitment even during his scheduled time off.
In addition to Griffin’s death, three others sustained injuries; two were hospitalized with unclear conditions, while the third was treated and released. All individuals involved have been accounted for.
Mayor Dave Kiffer remarked that in his 65 years in Ketchikan, he had never witnessed a landslide of such severity. This incident marks the fourth deadly landslide to occur in Southeast Alaska within the last decade.
The landslide not only destroyed homes but also knocked out power to several residences and temporarily blocked crucial roadways, including the Third Avenue Bypass. Following heavy rains over the weekend, officials cautioned the public against entering the landslide area, citing ongoing instability.
An evacuation order affected residents of neighborhoods including Third Avenue, Second Avenue, First Avenue, and White Cliff Avenue, with approximately 60 to 65 households reportedly impacted. Ketchikan High School has been designated as an emergency shelter, while the Saxman Community Center is also available for displaced residents. Local officials reported that around 12 people utilized the shelter on the first night.
The emergency response teams are working to clear affected roadways and restore power, although sections of First and Second Avenues may be without electricity for an extended duration. Authorities have also identified a secondary area near the original landslide that poses a potential risk for further slides.
Governor Mike Dunleavy has declared a disaster in response to the landslide, directing state agencies to provide necessary assistance to those affected. The state’s individual assistance programs are available for residents facing damages or emergency expenses due to the landslide.
In light of the situation, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District has postponed classes for all local schools, aiming to keep roads accessible for emergency services. Classes will remain canceled at least until Wednesday.
