Brady Smith, a 23-year-old lineman, and his wife Grace were set to announce their pregnancy during a photo session on Sunday. However, tragedy struck on Saturday when a tree fell during power repair work in Birmingham, leaving Smith in serious condition.

Smith was part of a crew working with Utility Line Construction Services, who were responding to the aftermath of storms that hit the area. While trimming limbs on 21st Avenue South, a tree unexpectedly uprooted and fell, causing Smith to land in a water-filled ditch. Co-workers quickly rescued him to prevent drowning.

Unfortunately, the same incident claimed the life of 57-year-old Jeffrey Scott Duffie, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith suffered significant injuries, including a broken spine and other fractures, leading to an eight-hour surgery at UAB Hospital. He is now awake and aware of the events, though his recovery path remains uncertain.

Family and friends are rallying around the couple, having started a GoFundMe campaign to assist with living expenses during what is expected to be a long recovery process. The couple, who married just last October, is facing not only the physical challenges ahead but also emotional and financial strains due to their sudden circumstances. Grace has remained by Smith’s side, highlighting the support of their community in this trying time.

Despite the challenges, the couple’s upcoming arrival offers a glimmer of hope, inspiring friends and family as they work together to navigate this difficult period. Donations to the GoFundMe campaign are helping to alleviate some of their burden as they focus on recovery and preparing for their future.
