A tragic hot-air balloon accident in Santa Catarina, Brazil, has resulted in the death of eight individuals after the balloon caught fire and plummeted to the ground on Saturday. The incident unfolded in Praia Grande, where dramatic footage showed the balloon engulfed in flames as it descended.
Eyewitness accounts reported that two people fell from the aircraft during the incident, with three victims found embracing each other in their final moments, described by Ulisses Gabriel, head of Santa Catarina’s civil police force, as a heart-wrenching image. In total, 21 people were onboard the ill-fated balloon, which included the pilot, and 13 survivors have since been hospitalized, as confirmed by the military fire brigade.
Santa Catarina’s governor, Jorginho Mello, expressed deep sorrow about the tragedy, stating that the state is currently in mourning. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire, while also prioritizing immediate aid and support for the victims’ families.
According to police reports, the pilot, one of the survivors, recounted that a fire ignited within the balloon’s basket. He attempted to lower the balloon before instructing passengers to jump to safety. Unfortunately, the rapid spread of the fire hindered many from escaping in time.
Hot-air ballooning is a popular activity in southern Brazil, especially during festivities dedicated to Catholic saints in June. The balloon involved in Saturday’s incident was expected to have a flight duration of 45 minutes, achieving heights of up to 1,000 meters, with ticket prices around 550 reais (approximately $100) per person.
Prior to this incident, another balloon accident in São Paulo state last Sunday resulted in the death of a 27-year-old woman and injuries to 11 others, highlighting the inherent risks associated with this form of leisure activity.
This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in recreational aviation. As investigations continue, the community is hopeful for healing and support for those affected by this tragedy.
