A tragic incident at McCabe’s Bar in DeLand, Florida, has led to the arrest of a former college football player in connection with a shooting that resulted in one death and left another person injured. The altercation occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning when a fight broke out among patrons, during which one individual brandished a firearm and opened fire.

The victim, identified as 32-year-old Keshod Harris, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital. In addition, a bartender suffered non-life-threatening injuries from gunfire to both hands and was also hospitalized.

Authorities have named 24-year-old Avantae Williams as the suspect in this case. Williams was apprehended on Monday and has been charged with second-degree murder. His background includes a stint as a defensive back with the Miami Hurricanes from 2021 to 2022 and a later transfer to the Maryland Terrapins in 2023. His collegiate career was marked by controversies, including previous legal issues involving charges for assaulting a pregnant woman, which were eventually dropped.

The shooting has prompted police to seek information from the public, offering a reward for details that could lead to further arrests related to the crime. Williams is currently being held without bond.

This incident highlights the need for increased safety measures in nightlife venues, as bar-related violence can have devastating consequences for communities. It also serves as a reminder of how personal struggles can impact young athletes, underscoring the importance of mental health support and community accountability in the sports world.
