Tragedy Strikes Apalachee High School: A Community in Mourning

A tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left nine others injured. The victims have been identified as students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, along with teachers Christina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall. The suspected shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, has been arrested and will face prosecution as an adult. Here’s what we know about the victims.

Mason Schermerhorn, a 14-year-old student, had recently begun attending Apalachee High School. Friends of his mother described him as lighthearted, with a passion for reading, video games, and visiting Walt Disney World. Doug Kilburn noted that Schermerhorn had an “upbeat attitude about everything.” Louis Briscoe shared his pain after hearing of Schermerhorn’s death, stating, “Nobody should have to go through this type of pain.”

Christian Angulo, also 14, was remembered by his elder sister, Lisette Angulo, who described him as a “very good kid,” sweet and caring. She created a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses and expressed her heartbreak over the loss. Friends recalled Angulo’s humorous and laid-back personality, with one stating he was in denial after learning about the shooting.

Christina Irimie, a maths teacher at the school, was also a victim. The 53-year-old was known for her patience and caring nature, earning praise from her students.

Richard Aspinwall, a 39-year-old maths teacher and the school’s American football defensive coordinator, was the second teacher killed. He received tributes from fellow coaches and schools, with Mountain View High School recognizing him as a former teacher and coach. Buford High School’s football coach Brandon Gill described Aspinwall as an “amazing husband, father, teacher, and coach,” expressing how he would “do anything for anyone.”

Among the injured, eight students and a teacher, identified as David Phenix, were wounded. Phenix, who works in curriculum assistance, underwent surgery after being shot in the hip, and his daughter expressed relief that he survived. Little is known about the conditions of the eight injured students, but authorities have indicated that they are all expected to recover.
