An air ambulance transporting six individuals crashed near Roosevelt Mall in northeast Philadelphia on Friday evening, according to Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, the company behind the aircraft. While the company refrained from confirming any survivors, it was reported that the plane carried four crew members, a pediatric patient, and an escort for the patient.
In light of the accident, Jet Rescue expressed deep concern for the families of those involved, as well as for any potential victims on the ground. Mayor Cherelle Parker stated during an evening press conference that the total number of fatalities and injuries was still uncertain, noting that several nearby residences and vehicles were affected by the crash.
The Learjet 55 had taken off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport and was bound for Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri when it went down around 6:30 p.m., approximately three miles from the airport. Eyewitness footage captured the scene, revealing smoke and flames following the crash.
The FAA announced that both the agency and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident, with the NTSB taking the lead. Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania confirmed his coordination with Philadelphia officials to provide necessary resources as they respond to the crash.
According to Rev. Todd Sheridan Yeary, a former FAA air traffic controller, the aircraft appeared to have had clearance to take off and traditionally possesses a reputation for reliability. He suggested that something went drastically wrong shortly after the jet lifted off the ground, indicating an unexpected catastrophic event.
Meteorological data indicated that, at the time of the crash, temperatures were around 49 degrees Fahrenheit, with light rain, fog, and wind gusts reaching up to 30 mph, potentially contributing factors to the accident.
This tragic event follows closely on the heels of a devastating aviation incident earlier in the week, which resulted in the deaths of 67 people when a passenger plane collided with a military helicopter over the Potomac River near Washington, D.C.
As the investigation unfolds, the community remains hopeful for clarity and answers regarding the circumstances surrounding this accident. The support of local authorities and emergency responders is essential during this challenging time for those affected.
