Tragedy struck this week when Flight AI171, destined for London’s Gatwick Airport, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India. The accident resulted in just one survivor among the 242 passengers and crew members on board, with additional fatalities occurring on the ground.
In response to the crash, India’s aviation authorities mandated Air India to implement enhanced maintenance procedures for its Boeing 787 fleet. This includes urgent inspections of the remaining aircraft in operation. As of now, 34 Boeing 787s are registered in India, with eight already having undergone these new inspections.
Boeing provided a statement expressing their support to Air India in the wake of this incident, extending condolences to all those affected. Meanwhile, U.S. officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are evaluating the situation and have confirmed that there is currently no need to ground Boeing 787 flights in the United States, as they have not identified any pressing safety concerns linked to the aircraft model.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy indicated that a team will be dispatched to India to investigate further, emphasizing the importance of relying on thorough analysis rather than initial video assessments.
