Kristina Folkerts, one of the victims in the tragic Park Tavern crash that took place on Sunday, was previously featured by FOX 9. The incident occurred when a driver, now in custody, crashed into the tavern’s patio, resulting in the deaths of Folkerts and another individual while injuring several others. Among the injured were nurses from Methodist Hospital who were celebrating a coworker’s final shift. Police have yet to officially identify the victims.
Folkerts had a long history with Park Tavern, where she worked as a server, reflecting a deep connection to the establishment. In September 2023, FOX 9 highlighted Folkerts’ story, noting that she had followed in the footsteps of her mother, Lauralee, a cherished server at the tavern for many years before her passing from ovarian cancer in 2008.
After her mother’s death, Folkerts found it challenging to return to the tavern filled with memories. However, upon becoming a mother herself, she chose to return to work at Park Tavern.
The crash occurred on Sunday night when a driver, now facing charges of criminal vehicular homicide, drove into the patio area. The Minnesota State Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Among the other victims was a group of nurses from Methodist Hospital who were enjoying their time at the patio, marking a colleague’s departure. One of the deceased has been identified as Gabe Harvey, an intensive care coordinator remembered fondly by his peers, including Dr. Thomas Stark, who praised his exceptional care for patients and their families.
Additionally, four more nurses were reported injured in the incident. Mary McGibbon, a Methodist employee, expressed her concern for her colleagues, wishing them peace and recovery.
In response to the tragic event, an online fundraiser established by Park Tavern has already raised $68,000 to support Folkerts’ family in the aftermath of the crash.
