The addition of Davante Adams is likely to leave another Jets receiver without a role, and that receiver is expected to be Mike Williams. According to league sources, the Jets are looking to trade the veteran wide receiver, who signed a one-year contract in the offseason.
Williams, selected seventh overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, had a seven-year tenure with the Los Angeles Chargers before suffering an ACL tear in Week 3 of the 2023 season. He was released by the Chargers earlier this year.
With emerging star Garrett Wilson already on the roster, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers having close connections with both Allen Lazard and Davante Adams, Williams finds himself as the odd man out. His chemistry with Rodgers has been underwhelming, with only 10 receptions on 17 targets totaling 145 yards over six games.
His performance hasn’t instilled confidence, particularly after a dropped pass in a recent game and an instance where he departed from his route leading to a crucial interception, prompting criticism from Rodgers.
As it stands, if Williams remains with the Jets, he is expected to be their fourth receiver, a position that doesn’t warrant the $10 million salary attached to his single-season deal. The question now is which teams may have interest in trading for him and what the Jets could potentially receive in return.
