Ken Nieland recently marked his 85th birthday by preparing for the auction of his beloved collection of restored John Deere Model B tractors and antique farm implements, set to take place on August 2. After retiring in 2002 from a long career in the building material industry, Nieland developed a keen interest in restoring old tractors, a hobby that he attributes to his father, who held an auction in 1993 that sparked his passion.
His journey began with the John Deere Model A tractor he fondly remembers from his childhood, which he bought at his father’s auction. Over the years, he turned to auctions to expand his collection, eventually restoring a total of 16 B John Deere tractors. Nieland’s garage has become a mini-museum dedicated to agricultural history, earning the affectionate title, “Ken’s Historical Agricultural Museum,” from his wife, Marilyn.
Restoring these vintage machines brings Nieland great joy, although the process can be labor-intensive and time-consuming. Depending on the condition of each tractor, he often spends a year on restoration. His projects have also included hand corn shellers and sleds, showcasing his resourcefulness and passion for preserving agricultural history.
Nieland’s love for John Deere memorabilia extends beyond tractors. He has amassed an array of collectibles, including puzzles and toy tractors, and he enjoys sharing interesting historical facts about the brand, like the transition from brass serial number plates to tin during WWII.
As he prepares for the upcoming auction, which will include not only tractors but also John Deere memorabilias like puzzles and tiny toy tractors, Nieland reflects on the joy and satisfaction he has derived from his hobby. Although he acknowledges that age is catching up with him and he has unfinished projects, he remains hopeful about pursuing smaller endeavors, such as gardening, in the future.
There is a positive energy surrounding Nieland’s story—his lifelong dedication to a passion that has brought him joy and connection with his community serves as a reminder of the fulfilling pursuits that can enrich retirement years.
