On a crisp Monday morning, U.S. Marine Corps troops took to the streets of Washington, D.C., to collect toys as part of the annual Toys for Tots campaign. Partnering with the Big Bus Tour company, the Marines made several stops at prominent locations to gather contributions from a months-long toy drive aimed at helping local children in need.
Sgt. Sean Clark shared with 7News that the toy drive commenced on October 1 and the goal is to support approximately 36,000 children this holiday season. The collected toys are destined for a warehouse where they will be sorted and then distributed to non-profit organizations and churches that can directly reach families in need.
Since its inception in 1947, the Marine Toys for Tots Program has successfully delivered millions of toys, bringing joy to children and demonstrating a long-standing commitment to community service. “It’s been very successful that way,” Clark noted.
The Marine Corps team collected toys from various locations including Five Below, Cube Smart, Capitol One Arena, Union Station, and a local fire station, where thousands of toys awaited pickup. Gunner Sergeant Tyler Eickenhorst emphasized the importance of this program for community outreach, stating, “As a father of three, it is a joy seeing the happiness on children’s faces when they get gifts, and I want to help share that with the community.”
For many Marines, participating in Toys for Tots offers a personal connection to the mission. Marine Gregory Edwards reflected on his own experience with the program, sharing, “Growing up, my family received donations from Toys for Tots. It feels great to be on the other side, helping families during difficult times.” He expressed gratitude for the community’s willingness to give and help ensure that families can celebrate wonderful Christmases.
Individuals interested in donating to the cause or requesting toys are encouraged to contact their local Toys for Tots chapter, with varying deadlines for donations depending on the location. This program not only spreads joy but also strengthens community bonds by ensuring that every child has a chance to experience the magic of the holidays.
