Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of finalizing a transfer deal to acquire Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for a reported fee of €40 million (£34.7 million). The 25-year-old midfielder is enthusiastic about the move, which is expected to proceed smoothly now that Spurs have made their formal offer.
While Aston Villa had also expressed a strong interest in Gallagher, discussions did not materialize as they prioritized maintaining financial discipline in their transfer dealings.
Gallagher, an England international, has been with Atletico Madrid for the past 18 months after committing to the Spanish club from Chelsea in a £38 million deal in the summer of 2024. The midfielder enjoyed a productive first season with Atletico, featuring in 50 matches and scoring four goals. However, his playing time has diminished in the current season, with only four starts in La Liga, although he did start in the Supercopa de Espana loss to Real Madrid recently.
Having progressed through Chelsea’s youth system, Gallagher made 95 appearances for the senior team following several loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion, and Crystal Palace. He was part of the England squad in the last three major international tournaments but has not received a call-up under current head coach Thomas Tuchel.
Analyst Jack Pitt-Brooke notes that Tottenham’s long-standing interest in Gallagher has intensified, particularly as manager Ange Postecoglou views him as a crucial addition to infuse energy into the team’s midfield. Tottenham’s midfield has struggled recently due to insufficient investment and injuries to key players, notably Rodrigo Bentancur, who will be sidelined for three months with a hamstring injury.
The need for a midfielder who can enhance the team’s tempo and drive is essential, especially with Pape Matar Sarr returning from the Africa Nations Cup soon. Gallagher’s experience and skill set would not only address immediate needs but also serve as a statement of ambition for Tottenham as they strive to improve their performance on the pitch.
