Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres is making a strong case to be a starter in the upcoming 2025 MLB All-Star Game, currently leading all American League second basemen in the first ballot update released by MLB. As of June 16, Torres has amassed an impressive 535,079 votes, outperforming notable players such as Jackson Holliday from the Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros’ Jose Altuve.
Torres, who previously participated in the All-Star Game in 2018 and 2019, could help the Tigers break a long-standing drought. The team has not had a second baseman earn an All-Star position since Ian Kinsler in 2014, with the last player to achieve this distinction via fan voting being Plácido Polanco in 2007.
The fan voting process for the All-Star Game consists of two phases. Phase 1 allows fans to vote for position players, excluding pitchers, until June 26, with each fan permitted five votes per day. The player with the most votes will receive an automatic starting position. Currently, Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge leads overall voting with 1,568,527 votes. The top two vote-getters for each position and the leading six outfielders will advance to Phase 2, where votes reset, and fans will select starters again from this narrowed list.
In addition to Torres, other Tigers players are also making strides in the fan voting. Outfielder Riley Greene, with 675,070 votes, is positioned second among AL outfielders, while Javier Báez also appears to be a contender. The Tigers have potential representation across several positions, with pitcher Tarik Skubal looking to return to the All-Star Game after earning accolades last season.
However, the Tigers have not had a player selected by fans since Miguel Cabrera in 2015, and the last time they featured three All-Stars in a single season was also in 2015. This places a spotlight on the current roster, as emerging performances from players like Torres and Greene may help the Tigers to regain their status in the All-Star landscape.
Overall, the Tigers appear positioned to have a competitive showing in the All-Star voting, with several key players on the cusp of representing the franchise at this prestigious event, renewing hope for the team’s fans.
