Authorities have reported multiple fatalities in St. Lucie County due to tornadoes that have caused significant destruction in the area. The tornadoes made landfall earlier today, primarily impacting the Spanish Lakes community in northern Fort Pierce.
During a press briefing, law enforcement officials, including the county sheriff and the county administrator, shared the current situation. Sheriff representatives indicated that the community experienced severe tornado activity, resulting in loss of life and extensive damage. Search and rescue teams are currently deployed, and deputies along with fire district personnel are actively sifting through the debris, working to assist those affected.
The Florida Highway Patrol and the National Guard have been mobilized to support local efforts with additional search and rescue teams arriving on the scene. Officials warned that this storm is expected to be deadly, as multiple tornadoes touched down within a short timeframe, catching many residents off guard.
Commissioner officials emphasized the difference between tornadoes and hurricanes, noting that while hurricanes allow for advance preparation, tornadoes strike suddenly and unpredictably, leading to chaotic conditions. Residents were urged to stay indoors to avoid putting themselves and emergency responders at further risk, as the situation remains critical.
The sheriff’s department reported that in the past 90 minutes, between six and twelve tornadoes were documented across St. Lucie County. While the focus is currently on the most heavily damaged areas, emergency resources are being extended to other neighborhoods as well.
In light of the ongoing danger and worsening weather conditions, officials reiterated their call for residents to remain at home, heed safety warnings, and avoid unnecessary travel. They noted that power lines are down and traffic signals are nonfunctional, complicating emergency efforts.
