An 18-year-old, identified as Malachi Chaney, is currently in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit following a tornado that struck the Locust Grove neighborhood on Thursday. Malachi’s father, Tray Chaney, recognized for his role in HBO’s “The Wire,” shared the heartbreaking news, revealing that his son suffers from multiple broken ribs and a fractured facial bone.
In an emotional Instagram video, Tray expressed his deep anguish, stating, “I wish I could replace the pain with my son. I wish he was the one who was doing the video and I was still in the ICU.” The tornado wrought significant destruction, damaging at least 13 structures, including the Chaneys’ home, which was completely obliterated. Reports indicate that Malachi was thrown over 100 yards away from the house and landed near the wood line.
The tornado struck with astonishing rapidity, catching residents off guard. Local authorities confirmed that the calls for rescue and reports of damage occurred simultaneously with the National Weather Service issuing a tornado confirmation, highlighting the urgency and severity of the situation. “It’s very scary that it would form so quickly and without warning and cause this amount of damage,” stated Henry County Police Deputy Chief Jason Bolton.
On the same day, weather conditions remain volatile, with the National Weather Service declaring another First Alert Weather Day, warning residents of potential lightning, damaging winds, and additional tornado risks as a cold front moves through the area.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of severe weather events and the importance of preparedness. The community’s response and support for the Chaney family during this challenging time are hopeful signs of resilience in the face of adversity.
