The School District of Clayton will be closed on Monday due to severe damage caused by a tornado that struck the area last Friday. Captain Elementary and Wydown Middle schools are currently without power, and debris hazards are still present around the schools, affecting streets and sidewalks.

The tornado hit during school hours and significantly impacted the Clayton district, which serves approximately 2,500 students. Fortunately, all students and staff were reported safe during the event. Superintendent Nisha Patel addressed parents in a letter, acknowledging the emotional impact of this disaster and emphasizing the district’s commitment to support students as they process the event. The last day of classes for the district is scheduled for May 30.

In addition to Clayton, University City High School and Jackson Park Elementary will also remain closed Monday due to power outages affecting the schools and surrounding areas. University City Superintendent Sharonica Hardin-Bartley confirmed the closures.

The storm damage extended beyond Clayton, impacting over a dozen schools in north St. Louis. Students from 12 damaged schools will be relocated on Monday, but transportation will be unavailable as the depot of the district’s primary bus vendor, First Student, was also affected by the storm.

Schools suffering damage included Ashland, Bryan Hill, Columbia, and many others, with issues ranging from broken windows to missing shingles. The tornado’s path included neighborhoods such as Fountain Park and Kingsway East, but all students and staff managed to take shelter and remained safe during the storm’s passage.

Cleanup efforts began across various locations, including Washington University, which sustained moderate damage, and Fontbonne University, which also announced closures due to significant damage. Despite the turmoil, the restoration of power to many buildings is underway, and communities are coming together to support one another during this challenging time.

This event has highlighted the resilience and strength of the affected communities, as they begin the process of recovery and rebuilding. With ongoing support, there is hope for a swift return to normalcy for students, staff, and their families.
