Topuria’s Delay Sparks UFC Interim Title Buzz

Ilia Topuria has confirmed that he will not be competing at the beginning of 2026, partly due to personal issues related to a private divorce and his responsibilities as a father to two children. Initially slated to return to the Octagon in January, Topuria’s plans changed unexpectedly, leading to speculation among journalists that he would be out for several months.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Topuria addressed his situation, stating, “I won’t be fighting in the first quarter of next year. I’m going through a difficult moment in my personal life. I want to focus on my children and resolve this situation as soon as possible.” He also expressed a desire not to impede the lightweight division, assuring fans that he will notify the UFC once he is ready to return.

Topuria’s absence paves the way for UFC matchmakers to arrange an interim title fight, potentially featuring Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett, both of whom are keen to secure a title shot. Arman Tsarukyan, fresh off a victory against Dan Hooker at UFC Qatar, could also be in the mix if any of the top contenders are unable to commit on specific dates or financial terms.

The UFC thrives on flexibility when scheduling fights, often prioritizing marketable fighters who are available over mere rankings. With Topuria stepping back, the path to an interim title fight has become clearer as Gaethje, Pimblett, and Tsarukyan all vie for the opportunity. The coming days will likely see exciting developments as the UFC navigates these matchups.
