Top Matchups to Watch: Exciting College Football Action Unfolds This Week!

Every Thursday, I will provide a preview of the upcoming college football week in my “Three by Three” segment. This week, I’ll highlight three key aspects from the Missouri matchup, the SEC, and the national scene. I’ll also aim to cover some lesser-known stories instead of focusing solely on Georgia and Ohio State.

Missouri vs. Murray State — 7 PM Thursday on SECN

Powerful Defensive Line

In a matchup where a top-tier team faces an FCS opponent, individual matchups may not create much excitement, but the level of play from entire units is significant. I’m eager to see Missouri’s revamped defensive line assert its dominance on Thursday. Beyond just winning, they need to overpower. With the departure of NFL player Darius Robinson and significant turnover in their tackle rotation, this group is experiencing a major transformation. I’ll be particularly interested in how defensive coordinator Corey Batoon utilizes Johnny Walker Jr. and Joe Moore at boundary defensive end, as they are expected to take on more coverage responsibilities. The performance of younger players like Marquis Gracial, Williams Nwaneri, and Jakhai Lang will also be closely watched. If the Tigers aim to replicate last season’s success, the foundation must be laid by controlling the line of scrimmage on Thursday night.

Transitioning Stars

This game marks a significant shift from last year’s roster. While last year’s standout players will always be remembered, they are no longer part of the program. I’m eager to see how new faces step up. Nate Noel has the potential to become a fan favorite with his explosive running style, adding a new dynamic to the offense. I’m looking forward to observing Marcus Bryant face off against formidable pass rushers. The emergence of Triston Newson and Khalil Jacobs as game-changing linebackers excites me as well. Additionally, Blake Craig has the tough task of replacing the legendary Thiccer Kicker. While some familiar faces remain, tonight we’ll cheer for the newcomers as they make their mark.

Luther Burden’s Big Night

While there’s excitement to see new players, there’s also palpable anticipation surrounding Luther Burden. We have limited opportunities to watch one of the most significant recruits in Mizzou’s history perform in a Tiger uniform. Burden’s talent elevates the program, and I expect the staff to create opportunities for him to enhance his statistics. Winning is the primary objective, but showcasing Luther’s abilities for national recognition later in the season is equally important. That journey kicks off tonight, and I can’t wait to see the excitement he generates.

In the SEC

Clemson vs. Georgia – 11 AM Saturday on ABC

This week features several intriguing clashes among Power Five teams, with four involving SEC squads. The SEC remains dominant, showcasing the best games across three time slots. This particular matchup is enticing, featuring two of the three active coaches who have claimed national titles. Georgia boasts a wealth of talent, but Clemson’s lineup is also impressive. Defensive tackle Peter Woods is a standout, leading a defense aiming to restrain quarterbacks Carson Beck and the Bulldogs’ offense.

Miami at Florida – 2:30 PM Saturday on ABC

Florida head coach Billy Napier faces increasing pressure amid a challenging SEC schedule and three in-state rivals on the non-conference slate. The Gators must start strong against Miami, or their season will face scrutiny. Miami has heavily invested in talent through NIL and the transfer portal, starting Cam Ward at quarterback. One of these teams will be facing disappointment come Saturday evening.

Notre Dame at Texas A&M – 6:30 PM Saturday on ABC

The Notre Dame offensive line is experiencing significant injuries, necessitating the use of backups or players initially intended for redshirt. This poses a challenge with a season opener against the talented and aggressive Texas A&M defensive front. The Aggies aim to dispel any notions of underperformance, benefitting from the leadership of coach Mike Elko. Expect a tough, physical game characterized by two strong defenses and offenses still finding their rhythm.

Around the Nation

North Dakota State at Colorado – 7 PM Thursday on ESPN

This matchup features a high-flying Colorado team against a formidable North Dakota State squad. Surprisingly, Colorado slowed down its pace after the mid-season addition of offensive coordinator Pat Shurmer, which is something to monitor as they face a physically tough Bison team looking to compete in the FCS.

Boise State at Georgia Southern – 3 PM Saturday on ESPNU

Finally, don’t think I’d overlook an exciting Sun Belt matchup. As two well-known mid-major teams clash in Georgia, expect a high-scoring contest. Boise is considered a favorite for the Group of Five playoff spot, though naming unheralded Maddux Madson as starting quarterback instead of five-star recruit and USC transfer Malachi Nelson surprised many. Regardless, they should find success against Georgia Southern’s leaky defense, making for an entertaining battle featuring standout running backs Ashton Jeanty and Jalen White.

Boston College at Florida State – 6:30 PM Monday on ESPN

This game intrigues me as I watch Florida State seek redemption after a disappointing loss in Week Zero. The Seminoles have a strong but imperfect roster, excelling in the defensive line and backfield while facing weaknesses at linebacker. They need creative coaching and sharp execution as they prepare for Boston College, which features a dynamic quarterback in Thomas Castellanos and a seasoned defensive front.
