The LSU women’s basketball team is set to conclude a three-game home stretch with a showdown against No. 22 Alabama on Sunday. Currently ranked fifth, the Tigers are eager to extend their winning streak to seven games. Head coach Kim Mulkey is approaching the matchup with respect for the competition.
After a recent victory over Arkansas, Mulkey emphasized the importance of managing the team’s energy during this challenging week. “I’m glad we’re at home. It is tough to have three games in a week and we’ve got to be smart,” she said. “Alabama, heck, they may be the best coaching staff in the SEC based on what they produce.”
The Crimson Tide, who have rebounded nicely from a loss to No. 15 Tennessee with two consecutive wins, pose a significant threat. In their last encounter, Alabama edged out LSU in an overtime game last season in Tuscaloosa. Mulkey acknowledged the skill and effort of Alabama’s coaching, led by head coach Kristy Curry and assistant coach Kelly Curry, both of whom she knows personally.
“I know Kristy personally and I just know what they do for Alabama, and I don’t think it gets talked about enough,” Mulkey stated, recalling a dramatic moment from the previous match where LSU’s Mikaylah Williams had a crucial free throw opportunity at the end.
Leading the Tigers are standout players Jessica Timmons and Essence Cody, averaging 16.1 and 13.5 points per game, respectively. Mulkey highlighted Cody’s significant impact in the paint and made note of the Louisiana ties present on Alabama’s coaching staff, including Brooks Donald, who previously coached at McNeese State and ULM.
As the teams gear up for a competitive game, Mulkey is optimistic about her players’ chances. “Their guards are really good, Cody’s really good in the paint and [they] got a lot of Louisiana connections on that staff. So, we’ll welcome them back, but it’s time to tip it off and let’s go play.” The anticipation builds as both teams prepare for what promises to be an exciting matchup.
