Tony Hawk, the iconic American skateboarder, made a surprise appearance at the Smithers Skate Park in northwest British Columbia, thrilling a large crowd of fans and enthusiasts. At 57 years old, Hawk demonstrated that he still has impressive skills on the skateboard during the open house event on May 29, marking the completion of the park’s expansion.
The Smithers Skate Park Society organized the event to celebrate the final phase of a significant renovation project. The park, which originally opened in 1996 as the only dedicated skate park north of Kamloops, has undergone extensive upgrades that have cost over $1 million, largely supported through fundraising efforts and grants.
Attendees were treated to a showcase featuring Hawk alongside other skateboarding professionals, including Mark McMorris, Grayson Fletcher, and Lizzie Armanto. The gathering at Heritage Park was filled with excitement as the community came together to appreciate the park’s enhancements.
As part of the project, the second phase was completed last summer, introducing an eight-foot bowl and seamless transition areas. The upcoming third phase aims to add essential features such as lighting, a shaded structure, a water filling station, and landscaping, which are expected to further enrich the skateboarding experience for the local community.
The successful renovations not only elevate the park but also highlight the ongoing commitment of the local skateboarding community to create a vibrant space for both seasoned skaters and newcomers alike. The contributions and enthusiasm shown during this event reflect a hopeful future for recreational opportunities in Smithers.
