Tom Selleck’s Frustration: Blue Bloods Cancellation Sparks Emotional Farewell

Tom Selleck has openly expressed his disappointment following CBS’s cancellation of his popular series “Blue Bloods.” The 79-year-old actor has portrayed Commissioner Frank Reagan since the show premiered in 2010. After 14 successful years, CBS announced last year that the series would conclude this fall. In a recent interview with TV Insider, Selleck shared his frustration regarding the network’s decision.

Selleck remarked, “I’m kind of frustrated. During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful.” He noted that the show continues to attract a significant audience, highlighting its ranking among the Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024, where it placed ninth overall and sixth when excluding football shows. He expressed disbelief at the notion that a show capable of dominating Friday nights for 15 years would be relegated to a poor time slot.

The Emmy-winning actor mentioned his sense of being taken for granted, as the series was always successful from the start. He reflected on the emotional experience of filming the last episode, recalling a moment of realization that there would be no follow-up work.

When asked what he would miss most about “Blue Bloods,” Selleck immediately spoke about the camaraderie between the cast. He emphasized the strong relationships forged on set, comparing them to the family dynamics of the Reagan characters they play.

Selleck’s co-stars include Donnie Wahlberg, Len Cariou, Will Estes, Vanessa Ray, and Bridget Moynahan. While he is saddened by the show’s ending, CBS Studios president David Stapf has hinted at the possibility of a spinoff.

“There are endless possibilities as to what a Blue Bloods spinoff would look like,” Stapf noted, suggesting the potential for further developments before the current season wraps.

This isn’t the first time Selleck has articulated concerns about the cancellation. He previously mentioned on “CBS Sunday Morning” that the show’s conclusion could jeopardize his financial stability regarding his California ranch.

Despite his disappointment, Selleck affirmed he will not retire from acting. “I hope there’s another Western in my future. Certainly whatever happens with ‘Blue Bloods,’ I’m not going to stop acting. I still hold out hope that CBS will come to their senses,” he stated.

The latter part of “Blue Bloods” final season will premiere on CBS on October 18, 2024, featuring eight episodes.
