Tom Hanks is set to reprise his role as Captain Krause in the much-anticipated sequel to Apple’s WWII film “Greyhound,” with production having officially commenced in Australia. Hanks not only returns to the role but also takes on the screenplay once again, reinforcing his commitment to the character and the story. Joining him is Stephen Graham, who returns in a supporting role, as well as returning cast members Rob Morgan and Elisabeth Shue. Newcomer Jack Patten has also been added to the ensemble cast.
Director Aaron Schneider, who was at the helm for the original film, is back to guide this sequel, while producer Gary Goetzman continues to lend his expertise. Unlike the first film, which was set in the North Atlantic, the sequel is set to transport audiences to the Pacific Theater, following Krause and his crew in their efforts to support the Allies in the aftermath of the Normandy landings.
“Greyhound,” which premiered on July 10, 2020, amidst the pandemic, was a blockbuster success for Apple TV+, marking the platform’s largest opening weekend release at the time. The film garnered viewership levels comparable to those of major summer hits, even though its theatrical release was disrupted due to the COVID-19 crisis. Initially, the movie had a theatrical debut planned for 2018, but it faced multiple delays, eventually launching as a streaming exclusive nearly three years after filming concluded.
As Apple TV+ continues to evolve its release strategy, questions linger about whether the sequel will see a theatrical release. Currently, the platform has shifted focus away from cinematic debuts, with only a few films receiving a traditional theatrical rollout each year. However, the trajectory of “Greyhound 2” may alter this trend if the project garners significant excitement and anticipation.
