Tom Brittney is set to feature in the highly anticipated period crime drama titled The Westies, created by Chris Brancato, known for his work on Narcos. The 34-year-old actor, who gained fame for his role as Reverend Will Davenport in ITV’s Grantchester, will be sharing the screen with Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons, famous for his performances in Whiplash, La La Land, and Juno.
Brittney announced his casting on Instagram, expressing his excitement with the caption: “See you in Hell’s Kitchen… Sláinte!” His Grantchester co-stars quickly offered their congratulations, with Robson Green and Rishi Nair praising the news in enthusiastic social media posts.
The Westies is set against the backdrop of 1980s New York City, focusing on the real-life Irish-American crime gang known as The Westies. According to a synopsis, the eight-part series takes place during the construction of the Jacob Javitz Convention Center, which offers a potential financial boon for the gang. Although they are vastly outnumbered by the Italian mafia, the Westies maintain a precarious balance through their notorious brutality and shrewdness.
Brittney will portray James ‘Jimmy’ Roarke, a young leader within The Westies, mentored by Simmons’ character, Eamon Sweeney, who faces challenges to his alliances as the gang collaborates with the Gambino Crime Family. The cast also includes Titus Welliver as conflicted NYPD officer Glenn Keenan and Jessica Frances Dukes as Birdie Polk, a Special Agent leading the FBI’s efforts against organized crime.
Production for The Westies is set to begin in Toronto in July, with the series expected to premiere on MGM+ across various international markets, although a specific release date has yet to be confirmed.
