Tom Bergeron, the former host of “Dancing With the Stars,” recently reflected on his journey with the show, including his views on the coveted trophy that dancers strive for. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he candidly shared that he used to poke fun at the glittering award but has since developed a fondness for it, especially after it was renamed The Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy in honor of the late judge who passed away in April 2023. “But now it’s got Len’s name on it, so that’s kind of sweet,” Bergeron remarked.
Having hosted “DWTS” for 28 seasons, Bergeron’s departure from the series in 2020 came after a disagreement over casting choices, particularly the inclusion of former press secretary Sean Spicer. Despite this, he regards his time on the show as a remarkable gift in his career. Reflecting on what he misses most, he humorously mentioned the paycheck but more truly valued the camaraderie he experienced with the cast and crew.
Currently, Bergeron embarks on a new adventure with Discovery Channel’s “Dancing With Sharks,” which premiers on July 20. In this unique underwater competition, expert divers will showcase their dance skills while surrounded by real sharks. He humorously compared the impressive performances of the sharks to some contestants from his time on “DWTS,” saying, “You know in the 15 years I hosted that other dance show, I saw some humans who didn’t do as well as these sharks.”
Joining him as a judge on “Dancing With Sharks” will be another “DWTS” alum, professional dancer Allison Holker. Although this new show ties back to “DWTS” with its dancing concept, the stakes are humorously different as Bergeron noted, “You leave with a very precious parting gift: all of your limbs.” He also assured viewers that the show would be lighthearted and not akin to the thrilling terror of “Jaws.”
This evolution in Bergeron’s career highlights a sense of resilience and adaptability as he embraces new opportunities while cherishing the memories of his past experiences. His transition from ballroom dancing to underwater performances showcases the diverse avenues for entertainment and the exciting possibilities ahead.
