First responders are actively responding to a train derailment that occurred in Todd County, near the Trenton community, early Tuesday morning. The incident took place just before 7 a.m., prompting local authorities to close the roads at the intersection of Highway 41 and Highway 475 until further notice.
Trenton Fire Department Chief John Stahl reported that the train was transporting molten sulfur at the time of the derailment. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as of Tuesday morning. Emergency crews are working diligently to investigate the situation, and hazmat teams from Hopkinsville have been deployed to assist with the clean-up efforts.
Chief Stahl expressed gratitude for the collaboration among local agencies, private organizations, and the community, emphasizing the fortunate timing of the incident occurring outside of town. To ensure public safety, a shelter-in-place order has been issued for residents in Trenton. Additionally, residents are advised to turn off their HVAC systems while conditions are being assessed.
Authorities are placing barricades and signage along KY 115 in Pembroke to redirect larger vehicles toward I-24 to the south or U.S. 68 to the north. As the investigation continues, there is currently no information available regarding the cause of the derailment.
