The Tennessee Titans have decided to make a strategic move by trading slot cornerback Roger McCreary to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a conditional pick swap, as reported by ESPN. The Titans will acquire a fifth-round pick that will land closer to the beginning of the round, while the Rams will receive a sixth-round pick positioned towards the end of the round. Notably, the Titans currently have three sixth-round picks at their disposal.
This season, McCreary has shown solid performance, tallying 33 tackles, one sack, two defended passes, and one interception across eight games. The former second-round pick from Auburn was selected by Tennessee in 2022 and had emerged as a significant player in the Titans’ defense. However, he finds himself in the final year of his rookie contract, leading to speculation about his potential as a trade target, especially as he seeks a long-term extension.
Despite being recognized as the Titans’ best cornerback and a reliable asset in the slot, the organization appears to be reevaluating its long-term strategy without McCreary in the plans. Over the course of his NFL career, which spans 55 games, he has accumulated 253 tackles, 17 passes defended, and three interceptions.
This trade marks the second cornerback deal made by the Titans in the past two months; they had previously traded Jarvis Brownlee Jr. along with a seventh-round pick to the New York Jets in exchange for a sixth-round pick. With L’Jarius Sneed currently on injured reserve, McCreary’s departure leaves the Titans facing a significant challenge, as they now move forward without their top three cornerbacks. The pressure will intensify on Darrell Baker Jr., Jalyn Armour-Davis, Samuel Womack III, and rookie Marcus Harris to step up in their absence, presenting an opportunity for these players to showcase their skills and potentially secure more prominent roles on the team.
