Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is generating significant interest in the current head-coaching cycle, with the Tennessee Titans being the first team to request an interview. This request marks Joseph as one of four targeted NFL assistant coaches by the Titans following their decision to part ways with Brian Callahan after a disappointing start to the season.

Mike McCoy, a former assistant with the Broncos, served as the Titans’ interim head coach but completed the season with just two victories out of 11 games. Joseph has previously held the head coach position for the Broncos during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He returned to Denver in 2023 as defensive coordinator, transforming a struggling unit into one of the NFL’s elite defenses. Under his guidance, the Broncos finished the 2025 season ranked second in total defense, just behind the Houston Texans. This marked the team’s highest defensive ranking since they led the league in 2015, the year they secured a Super Bowl victory.

The Broncos also established themselves defensively by claiming the third spot in scoring defense for a second consecutive year. Achieving a top-three finish in both total and scoring defense is a milestone not reached since 1989, during which his mentor, Wade Phillips, led the defense to similar success.

Joseph’s defensive unit has proven remarkably resilient, jumping from 25th in total defense in his first year back to seventh in 2024. His experience under head coach Sean Payton has further refined his coaching philosophy, especially regarding player evaluations and team culture. Joseph noted the importance of understanding players’ potential during the draft process, highlighting Payton’s dedication to selecting individuals who fit the team culture, which is crucial for success.

Joseph’s evolution as a coach is evident, and many believe he will implement strategies akin to Payton’s if he secures another head coaching role.

Additionally, the Broncos’ decisive 19-3 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers not only clinched the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye but also created opportunities for other assistants to explore head coaching positions with other teams. Among those expected to attract attention is Davis Webb, the Broncos’ assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach, who has previously shown strong leadership abilities.

With a promising trajectory, the future looks bright for Joseph and the entire Broncos coaching staff as they navigate a pivotal moment in their careers.
