In Timberville, Virginia, veterans and first responders are discovering healing and purpose through an innovative program at Breaking Free, a local nonprofit dedicated to equine-assisted learning. Co-founders Paul and Jenny Foltz have created a sanctuary where participants can work alongside horses and mules, fostering emotional recovery from challenges such as PTSD, anxiety, and trauma.
Since its inception in 2010, Breaking Free has harnessed the remarkable bond between humans and animals to aid those who have served their communities. The program pairs veterans and first responders with horses in interactive sessions structured to cultivate trust and promote healing. “The horses are the main therapists themselves,” Jenny Foltz emphasized, noting the significance of personalized support offered by a licensed therapist within the program.
Paul Foltz articulated the profound changes witnessed among participants, recounting inspiring stories of transformation. He shared the experience of a veteran who, after dealing with severe trauma, initially struggled with a stutter. Remarkably, as he engaged with a horse during grooming, the stutter vanished. Another participant, a veteran who once felt confined to her home, found solace and relief simply by spending time with the horses.
The organization offers its services free of charge, relying on the generosity of donations and fundraising efforts. Paul and Jenny emphasize that no prior experience with horses is necessary, allowing participants to progress at their own pace—sometimes taking weeks to establish a connection with the animals.
Breaking Free’s mission embodies a deep gratitude for the sacrifices made by veterans and first responders, aiming to connect these individuals with the healing power of the gentle giants they care for. “If we can just get them here the first time, that’s it,” said Jenny, as Paul added, “Once they touch a horse, that connection just takes over.”
