Justin Timberlake has initiated legal action against the Village of Sag Harbor and its police department, aiming to prevent the public release of body camera footage from his 2024 drunken-driving arrest. The actor and musician contends that the footage would severely infringe upon his privacy, as stated in court documents filed recently.

Timberlake’s legal team has requested a temporary restraining order from a Suffolk County Supreme Court judge to halt the potential release of the footage, which was recorded during a traffic stop on June 18, 2024. This request follows a Freedom of Information Law inquiry made by various media outlets. According to court filings, the footage reveals Timberlake in a vulnerable position during his encounter with law enforcement, capturing intimate aspects of his physical condition and behavior during sobriety testing and subsequent arrest.

Michael Del Piano, Timberlake’s attorney, argued that disclosing the footage could lead to “severe and irreparable harm” to the singer’s reputation, exposing him to public ridicule and harassment without serving any legitimate public interest. He emphasized that releasing the footage would constitute an unjustified invasion of Timberlake’s personal privacy.

The Village of Sag Harbor had initially intended to release the footage after conducting an internal review but postponed this decision pending the court’s determination. Mayor Thomas Gardella insisted that the village is not attempting to conceal information but is acting out of concern for the public and the integrity of the legal process.

On June 18, Timberlake was arrested after allegedly running a stop sign and displaying signs of intoxication, which included bloodshot eyes and poor performance on sobriety tests. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of driving while ability impaired by alcohol, receiving a sentence of 25 hours of community service and a $500 fine.

In court proceedings, Judge Joseph Farneti has encouraged both parties to explore potential resolutions before he makes further decisions on the case. Timberlake’s representatives have expressed concerns about the lasting consequences that could arise from the footage’s public release, including reputational damage and the irrevocable nature of digital content once it is disseminated online.

Timberlake’s case raises significant questions about the balance between public interest and individual privacy rights, an issue that continues to resonate in media and legal discussions as technologies advance and personal incidents become more readily available to the public eye. Despite the challenges Timberlake faces, he aims to use his experience to advocate against drunk driving, urging others to heed the lessons from his mistake.
