Tim Cindric, the former president of Team Penske, is making a return to the organization as a strategist for INDYCAR Series driver Scott McLaughlin. This move comes after Cindric previously served as strategist for drivers including Josef Newgarden during his illustrious career with Penske.
Cindric’s departure from the team executive role was notable, as he was let go along with two other executives following technical violations that raised concerns among teams and stakeholders in the sport. This was the second such incident for Team Penske within a short span, prompting scrutiny over the organization’s operations in INDYCAR.
Despite the challenges faced by the team, Cindric’s experience and proven track record as a strategist make his return a strong asset for McLaughlin and Team Penske. Diuguid, who has taken over as the INDYCAR and IMSA team president, will now work as the strategist for Newgarden while Travis Law steps in to guide newcomer David Malukas.
Diuguid expressed optimism about reuniting with Cindric, noting their long-standing professional relationship and the open discussions they’ve had over the years. Cindric’s desire to return was genuine, stemming from a period of reflection on his career within the series, and he reached out to Diuguid to explore the possibility of rejoining the team.
Cindric will primarily work trackside this season, focusing on direct collaboration with McLaughlin rather than spending significant time in the shop. Diuguid emphasized the extensive experience Cindric brings to the table, having successfully strategized for numerous high-profile drivers, which bodes well for Team Penske’s 2026 ambitions.
As Team Penske looks to improve on a disappointing 2025 season, where it secured only two wins and had an uncharacteristically low driver standings finish, Cindric’s return is seen as a pivotal step. His familiarity with the drivers and the competitive landscape of INDYCAR could create the momentum needed for a successful season ahead. Both Cindric and Diuguid have expressed confidence in working together to navigate any challenges that may arise, fostering a cooperative environment as the team aims to reclaim its winning legacy.
