Tigres UANL: Can They Overcome Their Fourth-Place Playoff Jinx?

Tigres UANL has been in a state of transition for several years, striving to establish a project that brings stability and returns them to the finals like they did under Ricardo Ferretti’s leadership. Although they celebrated victory in the Clausura 2023 and reached the finals in the Apertura 2023, their success over recent years has been limited, with their last notable achievement before this being the Concachampions and Club World Cup in 2021.

Juan Brunetta emphasized the urgency for Tigres to win the Liga MX, particularly given the significant investments the club makes in reinforcements. “The aim is to achieve the title with Tigres, a team that is used to competing for championships. We were close in the cup and have another chance in the league,” he remarked, expressing optimism about the team’s prospects as they navigate a crucial phase of the competition.

Following their semifinal exit in the Concachampions, Tigres is now focused on reaching the finals of the Clausura 2025. Achieving this milestone would not only validate Guido Pizarro’s project as coach, which began in March, but also fulfill the expectations set for the club by its passionate supporters.

Historically, however, Tigres has faced challenges when entering the Liguilla (final playoff) in fourth place, having previously been eliminated three times in similar scenarios. In contrast, they have had more success from second or third positions, making six finals out of eleven appearances, securing four titles and two runners-up finishes.

As they prepare to face Necaxa, a team that has made an impressive showing this season under coach Nicolás Larcamón, Tigres finds itself in a competitive matchup. Necaxa concluded the season in fifth place, just two points behind Tigres and demonstrated solid offensive capabilities, putting the pressure on Tigres as they aim to break their fourth-place playoff hurdle.

With a blend of resilience and past experiences, Tigres looks toward this critical matchup as an opportunity to turn the tide and reinforce their legacy as a powerhouse in Mexican football. The upcoming clash will be a pivotal moment for both teams and could potentially define Tigres’ season as they look to reclaim their standing among Mexico’s elite.
