Tigers Tame Guardians Again: Can They Sweep the Series?

Spencer Torkelson hit an RBI double in the sixth inning, helping the Detroit Tigers secure a 3-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday. This win marked the Tigers’ second consecutive shutout against the Guardians, giving them a 2-1 lead in the AL Division Series.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt acknowledged the team’s efforts but noted missed opportunities to score. “We were prepared for all of it. We took our shots when we had the opportunity to put some runs up… and then just didn’t come through,” he said.

The Tigers started with pitcher Keider Montero, who retired the Guardians in order during the first inning, throwing only six pitches, the fewest by a playoff starter since Wade Miley’s five pitches in the 2018 NL Championship Series.

Hinch continued to utilize his bullpen strategy, having rookie left-hander Brant Hurter pitch against key left-handed hitters in the second inning. Despite some offensive efforts from the Guardians, including singles from Josh Naylor and Lane Thomas, they failed to capitalize, leaving eight runners on base and going 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

The Guardians, who have not scored since the sixth inning of their Game 1 win, have an opportunity to tie the series in Game 4, with Tanner Bibee set to start. Vogt expressed confidence in Bibee, who had a successful regular season.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are aiming to reach the AL Championship Series for the first time since 2013, following a strong finish to their season.
