The Detroit Tigers have made a roster change by optioning struggling infielder Andy Ibañez to Triple-A Toledo and calling up outfielder Jahmai Jones from the same team. This decision comes after Ibañez’s disappointing performance, as he has posted a .200 batting average with a .578 OPS against left-handed pitchers since July 21, 2024, over 136 plate appearances.
Manager A.J. Hinch noted that Ibañez has not been performing at his potential, indicating that time in the minors may help him regain his form. “He has looked off at the plate and hasn’t quite been at the level he knows he can get to,” Hinch explained. “A stint in Toledo should get him grounded in his approach and get his swing in a good position to come back and help us.”
In contrast, Jahmai Jones is being given an opportunity to fill the role after an impressive tenure in Toledo, where he hit .276 with six home runs and an .875 OPS in 52 games. Manager Hinch expressed confidence in Jones’s abilities, highlighting his capacity to contribute as a reliable right-handed bat off the bench and in occasional starts against left-handed pitchers. Jones’s performance included a solid average of .283 and an .876 OPS against righties, showing his readiness to impact the major league roster.
As part of this roster adjustment, the Tigers designated outfielder Akil Baddoo for assignment to create a spot for Jones on the 40-man roster. This marks Baddoo’s second designation in six months.
Jones, who has played 69 MLB games over four seasons, previously played for teams like the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees. Notably, he has family connections to Detroit, as his father, Andre, played for the Lions. This personal connection adds a layer of significance to his arrival with the Tigers.
