The Detroit Tigers have made the decision to designate right-handed pitcher John Brebbia for assignment, as reported by local beat writers. This move comes alongside the promotion of right-hander Tyler Owens from Triple-A Toledo.
Brebbia, who signed a one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Tigers in February, faced challenges this season. After a disappointing tenure with a struggling White Sox team in 2024, where he posted a 5.86 ERA over 55 1/3 innings, he hoped to revive his career with Detroit. Unfortunately, his performance in 2025 has been even more troubling, as he has recorded a 7.71 ERA over 18 2/3 innings. Such a downturn in performance is likely a combination of bad luck, as evidenced by a .339 batting average on balls in play (BABIP) and a low 56.6% strand rate.
Prior to hitting the injured list with a triceps strain, Brebbia had shown promise with a stellar 1.00 ERA over nine innings and eight appearances. However, following his return, his performance deteriorated significantly, resulting in a staggering 13.97 ERA over 9 2/3 innings. His inability to maintain consistent pitching led to his current situation.
As the Tigers move forward, it is expected that they will absorb the remaining salary on Brebbia’s contract. If he does not get claimed by another team during his designation for assignment period, he could still find an opportunity elsewhere on a minor league deal. At 35 years old, Brebbia has experience on his side and could benefit from a fresh start in another organization as he seeks to regain his form.
This decision may come as a disappointment not only for Brebbia but also for Tigers management, who had hoped to see him contribute positively to the bullpen. Nonetheless, there remains a silver lining; with a new environment, Brebbia may still have the chance to turn around his season and career.
