Silivinosi Tikoinadramaki Naulumatua, a civil servant from Fiji’s Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, has embarked on a transformative journey in Surakarta, Indonesia, as part of the Indonesian Government’s TIAS scholarship program. This prestigious award, aimed at enriching educational experiences in the Asia-Pacific region, has enabled him to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at the University of Muhammadiyah.

In a heartfelt video message to The Fiji Times, Silivinosi expressed deep gratitude to the Government of Indonesia, the Indonesian Embassy in Fiji, and his ministry for presenting him with this remarkable opportunity. Having previously worked in Labasa with the Waterways Department, Silivinosi now finds himself in a vibrant new environment, rich in culture and diversity.

Upon arriving in Indonesia for the first time, he encountered both excitement and trepidation. “It’s totally a new environment for me,” he noted, highlighting the cultural differences he faced, including language barriers and culinary experiences. Despite these challenges, he has been pleasantly surprised by the warmth and kindness of the Indonesian people. “They really take care of us,” he remarked, noting the respect and friendliness he has encountered, regardless of differing religious backgrounds.

The support from scholarship administrators has also been instrumental in his transition, providing not only academic resources but also welfare assistance. A recent meeting with a life insurance provider gave him additional assurance regarding the well-being of scholarship recipients.

Language remains a significant challenge for Silivinosi, but he is taking proactive steps to overcome it. As part of the scholarship requirements, he has been participating in Bahasa Indonesia language classes since November, and he is beginning to feel more confident in daily conversations. “It’s challenging, but it’s a really good experience for me,” he reflected on the learning journey.

With his background in waterways management, Silivinosi is optimistic that his studies in civil engineering will contribute to Fiji’s infrastructure and enhance its climate resilience. He encourages fellow Fijians to consider Indonesia as a valuable study destination, sharing, “I hope you will enjoy it, because I’m enjoying myself right now.”

Silivinosi’s insights reflect the potential for cultural exchange and personal growth through international education, showcasing how opportunities like the TIAS scholarship can lead to broadening horizons and fostering global connections.
