Thunder Rookie Nikola Topić Battles Cancer, Team Vows Support

The Oklahoma City Thunder have revealed that Nikola Topić is currently facing a battle with testicular cancer. Sam Presti, the team’s executive vice president and general manager, provided an update, expressing optimism regarding Topić’s prognosis, stating that his doctors are “extremely positive” about his long-term outlook.

The 20-year-old Serbian guard has begun chemotherapy treatment, and while there is no set timetable for his return to basketball, Presti emphasized that Topić’s primary focus should be on his health. “Our only expectation of him is to focus on this. This is his most important priority. He’ll be back playing basketball when he’s able to, but we’re not putting any type of expectations on that. He has our total support, encouragement, and love,” Presti remarked.

Topić was drafted 12th overall by the Thunder in the 2024 NBA Draft. He missed the entirety of the previous season due to a partially torn ACL but participated in the Thunder’s recent Summer League and began the preseason on a strong note, contributing 10 points and seven assists in his debut against Charlotte on October 5.

Following a biopsy at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he is currently under care alongside specialists at the University of Oklahoma, the diagnosis of testicular cancer was made. According to the American Cancer Society, while testicular cancer is prevalent among males aged 15 to 35, it is also one of the most treatable forms of cancer.

Despite undergoing chemotherapy, Topić has remained engaged with the team throughout his treatment. Presti noted his determination, highlighting, “Topić is a really remarkable, remarkable guy… He has all the tools that you can ask for somebody to take on and conquer this situation.”

The Thunder community stands behind Topić in this challenging time, showcasing their unwavering support as he navigates through his health journey. This resilience and support bring hope, reminding fans and teammates alike about the power of unity and strength in difficult situations.
