Thunder Guard Nikola Topic Faces Testicular Cancer; Team Rallies Behind Him

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced that sophomore guard Nikola Topic has been diagnosed with testicular cancer. The 20-year-old Serbian, who was a first-round pick in last year’s NBA Draft and recently contributed to the Thunder’s championship victory, is currently undergoing treatment following a biopsy procedure.

General Manager Sam Presti provided an update during a press conference, stating that Topic had undergone a necessary surgical procedure at MD Anderson in Houston at the onset of training camp for the upcoming 2025/26 season. The biopsy results revealed that Topic is indeed facing testicular cancer, but Presti emphasized that the prognosis is positive, thanks to a supportive team of oncologists at both OU and MD Anderson.

Presti highlighted that testicular cancer is among the most treatable forms of cancer for men and indicated that Topic has already begun chemotherapy as part of his treatment plan. Despite his diagnosis, Topic has been actively training with the Thunder, who have started the season strong with a 5-0 record. Presti noted that Topic chose to keep his condition private until he began treatment.

“He’s been training and working out, showing resilience and determination,” Presti remarked. “This will be a challenging journey for him, but we have full confidence in his long-term outlook.” He added that the team’s primary focus for Topic is his health and well-being, minimizing any pressure regarding his return to the basketball court.

Despite not having played in a single game last season, Topic had some action during the preseason against the Charlotte Hornets, where he recorded 10 points, four rebounds, and seven assists in a 114-135 win. Presti concluded with expressions of support from the team, assuring that everyone is rallying behind Topic during this difficult time, acknowledging his maturity and resilience in facing the battle ahead.

This situation highlights not only the personal challenge faced by Topic but also the support and camaraderie within the Thunder organization, setting a hopeful tone for his recovery journey.
