Shane Lowry heads into the final round of the Truist Championship tied for the lead alongside fellow European Ryder Cup teammate Sepp Straka. Lowry achieved a solid three-under par 67 in the third round, featuring five birdies against two bogeys, with his final birdie on the 17th hole bringing him to a total of 14 under at Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course.
“I’m driving the ball pretty straight, not very far but it’s going on the fairway, and once I get myself on the fairway I can be dangerous,” Lowry remarked about his performance. He demonstrated optimism for the final day, stating, “If I can hole a few putts [on Sunday], you never know.” Looking forward, he acknowledged the competitive nature of the tour and reiterated the importance of consistently placing oneself in contention week after week, particularly as he competes against his friend Sepp.
Defending champion Rory McIlroy, who has historically thrived at this event with four victories, trails six strokes behind the leaders after an uneven round of 69. McIlroy, fresh off winning the Masters last month and completing a career Grand Slam, is looking to regain his footing as the US PGA Championship approaches next week.
Justin Rose, who withdrew from the tournament following a bout of illness that left him seven over par, stated, “It’s best for me to focus on a quick recovery prior to next week.”
Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood posted a commendable three-under par 67, moving to a total of seven under. Notably, Hideki Matsuyama delivered one of the standout performances of the day with a dazzling 63, consisting of nine birdies and two bogeys, improving his score to 10 under.
As the tournament approaches its final day, fans can look forward to an exciting finish with key players in strong positions and an illustrious lineup vying for the title.
