In 2026, sky-watchers can look forward to an exciting astronomical event featuring three supermoons throughout the year. The first supermoon, known as the Wolf Moon, will occur on January 3. This particular event marks the fourth consecutive supermoon following three witnessed at the end of 2025.

The two additional supermoons in 2026 will be the Beaver Moon on November 24 and the Cold Moon on December 23. Supermoons are seen when the Moon is at its closest approach to Earth in its orbit, making it appear significantly larger and brighter—up to 15% brighter and 30% larger than an average full Moon.

In addition to the supermoons, there will also be a blue Moon on May 31. This term refers to the second full Moon occurring within a single calendar month. Typically, there are twelve full Moons each year; however, due to the lunar cycle’s length, an extra full Moon appears roughly every two and a half years, giving rise to the phrase “once in a blue Moon.”

For those hoping to capture stunning photographs of these celestial events, it’s advisable to switch off flash on your device, utilize night mode, and take advantage of ambient lighting. Checking the weather forecast will also help ensure clear skies for optimal viewing.
