Sixteen-year-old Isimeli Nayacakalou is making impressive strides in the sport of badminton despite only having three months of experience. Currently competing in the Badminton Fiji Open Nationals at Yat Sen Secondary School in Suva, Nayacakalou’s remarkable talent has already garnered attention from tournament officials.
His journey into badminton commenced when representatives from Badminton Fiji visited his school to introduce the sport. As one of the few students who expressed interest, Nayacakalou quickly discovered a passion for the game, revealing that he fell in love with badminton from the moment he first picked up a racquet. “This sport is very similar to volleyball, as you’re just using a racquet instead,” he remarked. “I really enjoy playing badminton, and despite facing some challenging moments lately, I trust that God will carry me through.”
Tournament officials have been impressed by Nayacakalou’s rapid development and have identified him as a promising athlete to watch in the coming years. With several days of competition left, many are eager to see how this talented young player will fare against some of Fiji’s top badminton performers.
