Epeli Mudunakaci, a resilient 55-year-old farmer hailing from the highlands of Nadrau in Nadarivatu, undertakes a daunting three-hour trek to Lautoka City to sell his fresh produce at the Christmas market. He is among a dedicated cohort of vendors who confront significant logistical challenges to deliver their crops to the bustling urban market during the festive season.
The journey is financially demanding, with Mr. Mudunakaci detailing transportation costs that average $200 from Tavua Town and can reach up to $400 from Nadarivatu to Lautoka City. Nevertheless, he offers a vibrant selection of products, including dalo, melons, tavioka, cabbage, and tomatoes, showcasing the rich agricultural diversity of the region.
Despite the difficulties, Mr. Mudunakaci maintains competitive pricing, selling dalo for $30 to $40, while melons are priced between $5 and $15, depending on their size.
